Orbital ATK is currently recruiting for a Senior Director of Engineering to lead our Engineering Department at our Aerospace Structures Division (ASD). The position is located in Clearfield, Utah but also has engineering responsibility at all ASD sites including Dayton OH and Iuka MS.  It reports directly to the Vice President and General Manager leading an engineering team of over 300 people

Major Responsibilities

  • Develops, communicates and implements vision, strategy, goals and metrics to achieve business objectives for safety, quality, customer satisfaction, schedule, cost, and continuous improvement.
  • The engineering group has seven major areas of responsibility:
    • Manufacturing, process, and test engineering to support a diverse product portfolio within six Centers of Excellence.  Primary responsibilities for these groups include technical support and problem solving to enable each COE to meet its operational objectives and optimize processes.  Major duties include the generation and maintenance of all process instructions and documentation, discrepancy cause determination and corrective action implementation, development and implementation of process improvements, and leadership on cost reduction activities.  Special emphasis is required on the achievement of development program milestones and enabling production rate ramp-up requirements.
    • Product and Manufacturing Process Technology development including advanced fiber placement and forming techniques, advanced machining methods, high speed advanced NDT methods, and special processing to optimize low signature properties.  These technologies enable ASD’s value proposition and our continued success is dependent on continued technical innovation.
    • Design and Analysis utilizing state of the art tools and techniques to develop product designs that meet all program requirements for strength and performance and are producible at the required cost.
    • Project engineering that is the key technical customer interface and achieves customer satisfaction through direct involvement in Program reviews, on new business opportunities, and proposals.  This role also is responsible for establishment and maintenance of the program technical baseline and rigorous change control.
    • Tooling Engineering and fabrication support, including the analysis of strength and functionality to ensure delivered tools meet all technical and performance requirements.  The  group also performs project management duties to achieve cost and schedule requirements
    • Facilities and Maintenance departments to implement our Capital Equipment and preventative maintenance plans.  Key metrics in this area are technical functionality, cost, and schedule.  Installed equipment up-time is the other significant department metric.
    • Software and machine control group to ensure equipment runs safely and builds parts that are fully compliant with program technical and performance requirements.
  • Ensure key program technical development and production rate ramp-up milestones are achieved to meet program requirements
  • Utilizes effective talent management strategies to attract, retain, develop and engage outstanding people for the organization. Ensure staffing needs are fulfilled and programs are appropriately resourced. Monitor and implement employee development plans. Ensure leadership and key subject matter expert succession plans are in place and be proactive by coaching and mentoring key talent to assume increased responsibilities.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with all other ASD functional departments to enable division objectives to be achieved.
  • Partner with Flight Systems Group counterparts to pursue corporate technology strategy and continue to advance technical business objectives and innovate 

Skills and Knowledge

  • Bachelors degree in technical discipline
  • 10 or more years direct senior engineering management experience in the development and production of composite military and commercial aerostructures.
  • Experience in leading senior level engineering teams to achieve demanding goals.  The candidate must have demonstrated skills in building and leading a high performing team, establishing clear expectations, and promoting diversity. Understands the culture of large organizations and knows how to get things done through formal and informal channels. Communicates an inspired vision that motivates the entire organization. Demonstrated ability to empower and engage team members.
  • Technical and business acumen in the Aerospace industry to include knowledge of major manufacturing technologies and methods.  Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering experience including knowledge of fundamental manufacturing processes utilized in each ASD COE preferred.
  • Demonstrated history of using data and technical discipline to drive decisions/direction
  • Capability  to formulate and execute complex project plans and initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation and critical thinking skills.  Clearly demonstrated commitment to open communication.
  • Development and management of capital investment plans
  • Strong financial and budgeting skills, including EAC process familiarity.
  • Must  have or be able to obtain a security clearance to support programs at ASD
  • Command skills that inspire confidence of internal ASD teams to achieve objectives and portray credibility with our customers and upper management
  • Solid understanding of the AS9100 Quality system and NADCAP composite and NDI process requirements
  • Excellent LEAN understanding and demonstrated ability to nurture a culture of continuous improvement.  Ability to drive continuous improvements in organizations and processes by  strengthening application of lean thinking principles and tools across the workforce. 
  • Proven history of technical innovation in new product and technology development.  Demonstrated ability to reduce production costs through engineering innovation
